Pihak berkuasa British telah mula menahan migran sebagai persediaan untuk dihantar ke Rwanda dalam tempoh sembilan hingga 11 minggu akan datang, kata kerajaan pada hari Rabu, menyiapkan landasan bagi dasar imigresen utama Perdana Menteri Rishi Sunak.
Satu undang-undang untuk membuka jalan bagi menghantar pencari suaka ke Rwanda jika mereka tiba di Britain tanpa kebenaran telah diluluskan oleh parlimen pada bulan April, dan Sunak mahu penerbangan pertama berlepas pada bulan Julai.
Lebih daripada 7,500 migran telah tiba di England dengan bot kecil dari Perancis sejauh ini tahun ini, dan kerajaan mengatakan dasar ini akan menghalang orang daripada membuat perjalanan berbahaya melintasi Selat. Lima orang meninggal cuba menyeberangi selat minggu lalu.
Badan amal hak asasi manusia dan kesatuan yang menentang dasar ini dijangka akan melancarkan cabaran undang-undang baru untuk menghentikan penerbangan berlepas selepas Mahkamah Agung UK menyatakan dasar itu tidak sah tahun lalu.
Nigel Farage, presiden kehormat Reform UK, menulis di Twitter: “Jangan terpedaya dengan spin baru kerajaan mengenai perjanjian Rwanda ini.
“Lelaki Afrika ini, yang tidak menyeberangi Selat, telah ditolak suaka dan telah menerima £3,000 + penginapan percuma secara sukarela. Ini tidak akan menghentikan bot-bot.”
Walau bagaimanapun, Kemi Badenoch, Menteri Perniagaan, berkata pemindahan ini patut "diketengahkan" kerana ia menunjukkan bahawa negara Afrika timur itu selamat.
